Although it is most probable that some people will come along who already can play a tune or two (even much more) on the instrument, this workshop will focus very much on absolute beginners. Non-beginners, however, ARE also very welcome as they can/will enrich the experience by contributing their own knowledge and skills – and hopefully pick up some extra ideas and skills on the way.
So, this workshop will involve the following - with relevant handouts.
Brief introduction to the harmonica:-  This will cover the instrument's evolution and history, different manufacturers, types and their purposes.
Learning to play some notes:- This will promote all participants getting the “feel” of the instrument and initially getting to learn where the different notes are.

Learning to play some whole TUNES on the harmonica:- This will involve participants tackling and succeeding to play a slow air, or waltz, or march etc – AT THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL SPEED – with lots of encouragement, help and advice from Donald.

To facilitate learning to play tunes there will be several relevant handouts given out. All of these are based on a very inexpensive and appropriate instrument – the Hohner “Big Valley” tremolo 24 note model. To ensure the best usage of time and to obtain maximum benefit from this workshop, it is hoped that participants will purchase one of these, which Donald will bring with him. For people to bring along harmonicas of different types, keys and sizes to this type of workshop would prove to be very problematic. So, everyone will be learning/playing in unison and in the same key (ie D). All handouts will be tailored to this. Please note:- the price of these is £12 each – much less than if purchased in the shops!! No profit is being made by Donald on the sale of these.

Intermittently, there will be OPEN DISCUSSION, QUESTION & ANSWER SESSIONS where Donald will pass on any ideas and demonstrate some PLAYING TECHNIQUES.

In all of this Donald identifies two main objectives:-
1.  To be able to make a good start in effectively PLAYING SCOTTISH TRADITIONAL MUSIC ON THE HARMONICA

     2.  To ENJOY.
